How to create good closing sentences for essays

You will find plenty of advice on how to write a great opening sentence for your essay and equally so plenty of advice on a good closing sentence. Both are important. The opening sentence is designed to grab the attention of the reader, to hook them and to encourage them to keep on reading. But by the time we get to the end of the essay and you are writing your closing sentence, there is a different aim. Here you are trying to wrap up the proceedings.

What are the important qualities of a good closing sentence?

  • Does it leave the reader with a sense of fulfilment?
  • Does it sum up the theme of the essay?
  • Is it clear and easy to understand?
  • Is it the obvious thing to say?

By the time you get to the conclusion of the essay, the reader will have pretty much made up their mind whether or not they agree with what you have to say and whether or not they've enjoyed reading your essay. The conclusion of course is very important. It must not contain any new material and it must be a summary of all that has gone before. That's why the conclusion must give the reader a sense of fulfilment.

You will have a thesis statement in your essay and during your essay you will set out to prove that thesis statement. Therefore when you come to the closing sentences in your conclusion you'll need to make sure you sum up that thesis statement or the theme of your essay.

All of the writing in your essay must be clear and easy to understand and this of course applies to the closing sentences. You have made your case well in the body paragraphs and now you must reiterate those main points in a clear and easy to understand way.

You can develop an argument which says the closing sentences for your essay must be the obvious things to say. Having read everything which has gone before, what you say at the end must be logical and obvious.

Some people argue that the conclusion should never be considered until you have completed every other part of your essay. Only when you are happy with the introduction and body paragraphs should you start to write your conclusion. It is a reflection of or a response to all that you have written before.
